The objective of this association is to assist in promoting the professionalism of the police service; to represent the members of the association in all matters of wages, hours and conditions of employment; to encourage among the members a closer personal acquaintance and a friendly spirit of mutual cooperation; to encourage, contribute to and wherever possible, and to assist in all matters pertaining to welfare and advancement of all members of the Madera Police Officers Association.

History

In 1969, the Madera Police Officer’s Association was formed by Madera Police Sergeants Gordon E. Skeels and Kenneth Shrum, with the approval of the late Chief W. Horace Dowell. The formation of the Association was the “Betterment” of the overall conditions of the MPD’s employees. The Association is the bargaining unit for all of the Police personnel, below the rank of Commander and it is one of the recognized leaders, among the other city employee groups.

At one time, the Association was involved in several fundraisers each year and thousands of dollars have been donated. Among some of the activities and community events that have been sponsored in full or part have been Channel 18 television, FFA, 4H, the Madera Heartland, Babe Ruth and Bobby Socks baseball, Little League (National), Madera High School Football and Baseball teams and Madera High School Band.
